AUSTIN — Thanks to a rebounding economy, the Economic Stabilization Fund grew from $5 billion to $6.1 billion since last year, according to the state’s chief revenue estimator. And if this robust growth continues, by the end of Fiscal Year 2013 the savings account should grow to $7.3 billion, a 19.7-percent increase.

DCI: Best and Worst States for Business

DCI’s “Rating of the States” has consistently received intense attention from both the news media and the economic development community.

To determine which states are winning the “perception” contest, we asked survey respondents to name three states perceived as having the most favorable business climates in the United States. We also asked the same audience to select the three states they perceive as having the least favorable business climates among the 50 states.

California Delegation Coming to See What Texas Does Right on Jobs

Saying they’re stung by losing jobs to Texas, a group of California legislators will begin its self-proclaimed “fact-finding” mission to Austin on Thursday. The trip was organized by state Assemblyman Dan Logue, a Republican from Linda, Calif., who hosted a similar trip to Nevada two years ago. States including Texas have lured businesses away thanks to California’s excessive regulation and taxes, he said.

Gov. Perry Says Texas Added More Jobs in 2010 Than Any Other State – True

During his State of the State address, Gov. Rick Perry countered those “painting a pretty grim picture” of Texas finances “with the good news that continues to flow from our comparatively strong economy.” “Have the doomsayers forgotten that Texas added more jobs in 2010 than any other state?” he said in the Feb. 8 speech. We’ve checked other claims about Texas’ job growth, including Perry’s statement in June that Texas had added more jobs than the other states combined. We rated that True; from January 2001 to June 2010, Texas had a net gain of 853,400 jobs.

NCPA: Right-to-Work States Outperform Forced-Union States

Right-to-work laws allow workers to opt-out of union membership. Contrary to much union rhetoric, these laws don’t ban or bust unions. They simply grant individual workers the right to join or not to join, even once a workplace is organized by a union. Workers who decline to join the union can’t be forced to have dues taken out of their paycheck and thus used to finance union political campaigns, says the Wall Street Journal.

Carl’s Jr. parent considers moving its headquarters to Texas

Andrew Puzder, chief executive of the parent of Carl’s Jr. restaurants, said he is meeting today with Gov. Rick Perry to discuss whether to move the California-based company to Texas.
Complaining that it’s “easier to open a restaurant in Shanghai than in California,” Puzder said he is drawn to Texas’ “business-friendly” atmosphere and the prospect of a 10 percent pay raise, thanks to the state’s no-income-tax policy.

Austin Ranks 3rd Among Best Cities for Military Retirees

Austin’s not your traditional military town, but its healthy economy, proximity to Army posts and cool factor have earned the city a third-place ranking on a national survey of best places for military retirement. The first-of-its-kind survey, released today by USAA and Military.com, has a strong Texas flavor. Waco, with its affordable housing and manufacturing industry, topped the list; College Station came in fourth; and San Angelo placed sixth. Rounding out the top five were Oklahoma City at No. 2 and Harrisburg, Pa., in the fifth spot. The Texas cities earned extra points because federal pensions are not taxed in the state, rankers said.

Voters Support Lawsuit Reform. Will Lawmakers Listen?

Texas is a model for the rest of the country when it comes to Tort Reform; and Texas voters want to keep it that way. Passing tort reform has provided Texas with more doctors, jobs and businesses relocating to our state.

A recent statewide survey of Texas voters shows that any concentrated – and well-funded – efforts to push a pro-lawsuit, anti-reform and anti-jobs agenda are out of step with Texas voters.
