Population Growth Surging Around Dallas, Other Texas Cities

Most of Texas’ phenomenal growth over the last decade followed the route of Interstate 35 — from the Rio Grande Valley to San Antonio , Austin and Dallas-Fort Worth, a broad swath that included seven of the 10 fastest-growing counties in the state. And much of that growth was fueled by the fast-growing Hispanic population. Four of those top 10 counties surrounded Dallas, according to 2010 U.S. census data released Thursday: Rockwall County, which grew 82 percent; Collin, 59 percent; Denton, up 53 percent; and Kaufman, 45 percent.

Report: Tort Reform in Texas a Success

A legal reform group says legislation passed in 2005 to help Texas courts deal with asbestos and silica lawsuits has been successful. The Texas Civil Justice League on Tuesday released a report, calling the legislation a “Texas success story.” The law required plaintiffs to show certain medical evidence to move their lawsuits to an active docket and also asked judges in two multidistrict litigation courts to provide progress reports last year. Harris County Judge Mark Davidson handled the asbestos MDL and Harris County Judge Tracy Christopher was appointed to the silica MDL, but was replaced by Judge Tad Halbach in 2009 after taking a job on an appeals court.

We’ve checked other claims about Texas’ job growth, including Perry’s statement in June that Texas had added more jobs than the other states combined. We rated that True; from January 2001 to June 2010, Texas had a net gain of 853,400 jobs.

NCPA: Right-to-Work States Outperform Forced-Union States

Right-to-work laws allow workers to opt-out of union membership. Contrary to much union rhetoric, these laws don’t ban or bust unions. They simply grant individual workers the right to join or not to join, even once a workplace is organized by a union. Workers who decline to join the union can’t be forced to have dues taken out of their paycheck and thus used to finance union political campaigns, says the Wall Street Journal.
